Tech Stuff

i have an apple mac 15" powerbook G4. it's loaded with tiger, 60gb memory and 1.2gb of ram, and is used with a 256gb external hard drive where i keep all my photos and music and backups, a 60gb video ipod which also backups my photos and music, and an external DVD burner which burns hard copy backups of e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g.

the site is hosted by the very excellent Earth First (based in N.Z.) - they have constructed a kind of unique sponsorship account for me, to cope with my bandwidth, and their support rocks.

the blog is powered by movable type 3.121

the gallery is powered by gallery2

my photos are organised using the very fabulous iview media pro

the site is maintained using dreamweaver mx, although less and less now that movable type is becoming my site-wide format.

digital photos from before december 2005 were taken with my trusty canon powershot g3. post dec 2005, all digital photos are from the canon 300D (aka digital kiss / rebel XT) and a canon 18 - 55mm lens, or canon 75 - 300 mm zoom. i also have a lomo colorsplash, a konica electron vintage camera (1969) and a polaroid one.

i use photoshop CS to edit my images though i almost never crop (it mnakes me feel like I'm cheating- just tidy up the levels.

when i used a PC, i used mozilla firefox as my browser. it makes my site look beautiful. you should try it. of course, safari is also very good, as are camino and opera, all with their own pros and cons. if you are still using internet explorer, you must be facing a world of popup windows, spyware and mal-ware daily. get out, NOW!

i use bloglines as my RSS newsreader (because i can access it from any computer), and you can check out my daily reads here or at the links page.

You can find the frangipani blog full entry RSS feed here: and the excerpt RSS feed here:

i am completely self taught in internet technology, using the massive support of the internet. i am still very much a beginner. any advice or suggestions are welcome. please mail me - martine at frangipani dot info.

if you have enjoyed the site in any way, please feel free to donate. as tacky as it is to ask for donations, i am finding it difficult to maintain this expensive hobby...

Hi Edgar,

Thanks for dropping by. Glad you find the site so useful, always nice to hear feedback like this. As for jobs in Japan, you can always check the job guides and see if anything else comes up that suits you - there is always all sorts of work going. Check gaijinpot, jobs in japan and the japan times newspaper.

Good luck to you! Gambatte!

Hi Joao,

Thanks so much for your lovely comments. You just cheered me up enormously! I really want to visit Portugal one day, and Spain. Two great places in Europe - maybe the only Western places I really want to visit.

Cheers and thanks again.

Hi Martine,
Sorry to read about your dash home...hope you're doing OK.
Was just surfing, looking for frangipani images and found your site. I love it.
I'm an Aussie who has just moved to Dublin with my fiance via South America and Canada (9 months travelling - brilliant!).
I studied some Japanese at school and at ANU in Canberra, so I'm now feeling jealous of your locale!
Will drop you a proper email as I'm seriously looking for a frangipani graphic for a new business I'm setting up over here...
keep up the great website and take care!
cheers
Danielle

Hi Martine, I am a regular reader of your site, a Toykoite and we have many mutual friends. In fact I am very surprised our paths haven't yet crossed. I have a proposition for you - if you are free on Saturday 1st April I would be very happy if you could be the official photographer at my wedding celebration. I would pay you and you can attend the party as a guest - there will be people you know there. You don't have to post this as a comment unless you want to give other people ideas. To give you a bit of info, we are not having a ceremony, we are not going to a chapel, we are going to the park for a couple of hours (hopefully with Sakura...) for champagne and snacks, then on to a lovely bar in harajuku for a party. I am so excited. I was talking to Tracey about you at the weekend and she thought you would be well into the idea. Let's discuss this further over a drink sometime. Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Thanks very much for your offer and of course, I am up for it. It'll be cool to photograph a casual Tokyo wedding. I'll email you to arrange a get together.

Cheers
