Post Title: Walking the four corners of Japan
Excerpt: Anyway, fast forward quite a few years and miles, and Ivan is now living round the corner from me here in Kichijoji, preparing for an adventure far more punk rock than any Oz Pub Band. He's going to walk solo across Japan, from its most easterly point in Hokkaido, to its most westerly point. Don't panic - he's done some massive walks before and survived to tell the tale in his inimitably enjoyable acerbic style. He's a brilliant writer.
And there's a cool zesty-lemon tangy twist to this adventure: his buddy Chris - another brilliant writer - is also walking solo across Japan, but from the most southerly point to the most northerly point at the same time. They plan to meet half way... it's all - in the warm spirit of reckless adventure - for charity (and a toasty inner glow), and they're gonna blog the whole thing. Read on, friends.

Post Title: Happy New Year!
Excerpt: Happy new year! 2008! Holy cow. How time flies. Wishing you all a fresh year of delight, joy, mischief, adventure, love, travel and satisfaction. I will probably be leaving Japan this year, so if anyone has plans to come and visit me there, you'd better do it soon! Still haven't decided where I'm going next - anything is possible. In the mean time, I have a week left in Australia and I'm having a great holiday. Hope you are/did too.... Post Title: The eagle has flown
Excerpt: Phew. Think I'm gonna sleep for a week. The eagle (the surprise visitors ie my brothers family) has flown and I actually went home early last night sober and had tim-tams, vegemite toast and tea for dinner. What an amazing week it's been. Hectic, frenetic, fabulous, drunken, laughter-filled, adventure-filled, crazy and utterly wonderful. Think I wanna turn 40 every year, it's so much fun! Thanks to everyone who helped organise and/or participated in the celebrations! I've been going through the zillion photos and started editing, but it'll take a while. Here are a few from yesterday - my families...

Excerpt: Just a quick one. I'm at work and have an unexpected free period so thought I'd take this time to offer a quick photo-less update as to why things have been so quiet around frangipani.info... Ha, where do I start? With the great big hotpot of love, I guess. The perfect antidote to the coldness of Tokyoites that has been getting me down (again) recently: a huge surprise party thrown by my dear friends and family to celebrate my impending 40th birthday. I was kidnapped (willingly) and taken to Ohama Beach, down near Shimoda on the Izu Peninsula and surprised...

Had planned to write a long thoughtful entry, musing on the hellish year that just clocked out but I've just been having so much fun partying cathartically every night this week that I don't have the mental or physical energy. So let's just leave it at this: THANK YOU to all you dear readers - friends, family and complete strangers - for your fond support and contact during the often unbearably hard times of 2005. Post Title: He waited with his bags packed
Excerpt: After a surreal dash through the clouds, I found myself holding the hand of the waiting man who once looked like my father, surrounded by a hi-tech wall of blips and bleeps and tubes. We met with the doctors and agreed that the removal of the respirator was the kindest thing we could do in light of full renal failure, severe cardiac scarring, chronic diabetes, and emphysemic lungs. The beautiful nurses moved him into a private, dark room and one of them sat with me as I held his hand and stroked his arm for the 15 minutes it...

Post Title: Wait for me
Excerpt: Last night as a level 5 earthquake hit Tokyo, I was listening to some Tibetan Monks chanting and meditating a message to my father: "Wait for me, please". Of course, all earthquakes tend to be a bit erm... scarey and intense... but even more so when you have not long before learned that your father is in intensive care, on life support, in a far away country in the southern hemisphere. I found myself outside in the garden, watching the powerlines and trees dance their well-practiced quake-waltz, crying, as you do in these ridiculously hopeless situations. I'll be arriving...

But it's not every jolly holiday that one gets to enjoy the delights of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake! Excerpt: Is it just me, or is the world going to hell all in the name of religion? I wonder what Mahommed, Buddha and Jesus would have to say about the fucking mess. They would be pretty damn disillusioned. I thought all this education and technology was supposed to enlighten us as a global society, to recognise the wisdom of tolerance, love, peace and charity. Excerpt: From the UK: Dripping wet and deeply disturbed, the smartly-dressed man was discovered walking along a windswept road beside the sea. Over the next few days he steadfastly refused, or was unable, to answer the most simple questions about who he was or where he had come from. It was only when someone in hospital had the bright idea of leaving him with a piece of paper and pencils that the first intriguing clue about the stranger's past emerged. And the privacy of it all! A secret theater of speechless monologue and prevenient counsel, an invisible mansion of all moods, musings, and mysteries, an infinite resort of disappointments and discoveries. Excerpt: Some 16 year old Japanese high school students spend their winter vacations lazing around at home in front of the playstation or DVDs, others hang out with their friends in karaoke boxes or shopping expeditions, others immerse themselves in their club activities or cram schools. And then others, like my grade 10 student Yuki, travel around Japan at their own expense, trying to find the perfect train photo. Yuki is a classic Otaku - an obsessive [train-spotter/camera] geek. Post Title: The Yonaguni Ruins
Excerpt: Archeologists have long believed that civilization as we define it - intelligent, tool-making, monument building, social humans - began about 5,000 years ago. But submerged beneath the waves near the Japanese island of Yonaguni is evidence that may well overturn that long-held theory. A small but persuasive number of scholars and scientists have long thought that "advanced" societies may have existed as long as 10,000 years ago. Their theories, however well reasoned and defended, have been hamstrung by a lack of evidence. But recent discoveries of man-made artifacts on the Pacific seafloor may well prove to be the smoking gun that will propel this alternative view of civilization to prominence.
