The Pixies in Tokyo (amended)

So the Pixies never made it to my neck of the global woods while they were trail-blazing their way through the world of independent rock back in the 90's. Regardless, their music was the soundtrack to my psychedelically stellar uni career, not to mention a million parties and band night between-set-fillers....

The lights dimmed, that cool Pink Floyd riff (I think it was Monalisa Overdrive - that one that Dementia Thirteen used to cover) came in, the crowd went wild and everyone started screaming and waving their arms in the air - myself included. It was a wild ride from go to woah, and I for one was covered in goosebumps for most of the first 2 or 3 songs. They were tight, fast and in mind-blowing form. They played them all - and the sights and sounds of 2000 voices singing along to Monkey Gone To Heaven with sh*t-eating grins (sorry Ann) on their faces will stay in my memory for many years to come.

Dear Pixies, you guys have SOOOO still got it! The pics above were taken from the blog of the some of the Pixies CREW members - go check it out, it's really cool. This is what the tour manager said about the show I went to:

TOKYO ONE: Today we are in Tokyo. The band are rocking their way through an amazing set tonight , and the crowd is going crazy. Starting tonights show was a blistering rendition of 'Gouge Away', and the 'Debaser' and 'U Mass' were as good as I have ever heard them. A great night indeed....

The pic below was taken on the Yurikamome monorail on the way out to Odaiba for the show - thats the Rainbow Bridge in the background. I love playing with reflections in photos, I'm really happy with this one of a friend, Greg. We had a great night out after the show with a euphoric bunch of lovely music lovers (Robert - thanks again for the ticket) - looking forward to the next show - maybe Mogwai at Unit? (NO!!! Just found out this show is now sold out!)

i LOOOVE the Pixies, sounds like a great night. Saw them play in London not so long ago and they were great then too.

That bottom picture of the reflection is fantastic - what a great perspective, the guys face just perched in the L of the bridge, floating out. Cool.

I'm sooooooooo jealous! Tell them to stop in Tucson on the way home.

Your work is amazing, by the way. I could've written a long boring letter praising your brilliance and asking a billion silly questions, but seeing the Pixies, I just had to blurt this out instead.

On another, Pixie-related note, have you heard the pillows song "Kim Deal?" Its sweet.

i'm somewhat of a fan of the pillows myself. i don't get the chance to listen to a lot of japanese music and aside from jpop (which is baaaad) there are few japanese bands that i really like and the pillows is one of them.
and martine is to blame for me liking another japanese "alternative" band. she presented a band called miaou a couple of updates ago. weird name, weird "indie" sound weird pace and great melodies :)
it's like the notwist (uk band) but without the chemical sounds. rocks.
