New York, Paris, San Francisco, Tokyo...

Look! Is it Paris? Is it San Fran? Is it New York? No, it's Odaiba, in the Tokyo bay area. That's the fake Statue of Liberty (maybe half the size of the real one?), Rainbow Bridge (which bears more than a passing resemblence to the Golden Gate), and Tokyo Tower - a not-so-miniature copy of the Eiffel Tower in the far distance, all lit up red.

Damn, sometimes Japan can just be so tacky. I love it.

Odaiba is a section of reclaimed land that has become a kind of shopping mecca and daytrip outing for young couples looking for a date activity. Full of glass, chrome and stainless steel themed buildings, shopping centres, restaurants, 24 hour cinemas, car display showrooms, amusement parks, and one of Tokyo's better mid-sized venues - Tokyo Zepp (our destination for the afternoon), it is a truly surreal place, well worth a visit. I put it off for too long and can't wait to go back and spend a whole day getting lost there.

Why thank you Ms A. I play with photoshop to make my piccies look a little more dramatic so don't be too depressed: I CHEAT!

Limo, I went to a really cool event put on by J-Wave radio station, featuring 3 emerging indie bands that are doing really well right now - and they all have new products or tours happening at the moment. 2000 people saw the bands Fumido, Fuji Fabric and Remioromen. Interesting bands, all very different styles. My friends BF works for Microsoft PR and they were sponsoring the event - we got free tickets and were the only foreigners in the building (apart from the DJ Compere).

You can think what you want about the bridge and the tower, but the statue has a bit of history behind it: During the "Year of France", France shipped the Paris copy of the statue (given to France by the American Community in Paris) to Tokyo and put it on display. (Remember, the French gave the "real" statue to America in the first place.) After the year was done, the small Paris copy went back to Paris where it belongs. Apparently, its spot in Tokyo was then filled with yet another copy (of the copy).
