Sumo Banzuke

Sumo, contrary to popular opinion, is not a regular thing in Japan. Sumo tournaments are big, grand events full of ritual, tradition and history, and are only held 6 times a year - and only 3 of them are in Tokyo: January, May and September.

I'm embarrassed to say that last weekend was my first taste of real Sumo. And I'm sure it won't be my last coz I had a great time. Here is the gallery. I even got to see Asashoryu (the [Mongolian] current grand master, or Yokozuna) do his official ritual - stomping away the evil spirits and then stomp all over his opponent. The guy is a powerhouse!

In other news, I just heard that lovely Kylie Minogue has just cancelled a big tour of Australia because she has breast cancer. Nooooo! I love l'il Kyles like a sister. And worst of all, she is my age. Pretty scarey. Good luck, Kyles.

Yes, going to see sumo tournaments is great, and I haven't gone to one for too long. It's especially a good time now to go to the tournaments because the popularity of sumo has fallen (combination of no big Japanese star rikishi like the Waka-Taka brothers, and a foreigner yokozuna, I think) and it's therefore not hard to get good seats.

I once even got good seats for the final day of the tournament a few days into the tournament (an impossibility a decade ago)!

Great pics as always. Sumo just looks so cool. Those guys are badasses.

Too bad about Kylie Minogue. Sure she'll pull through though!
