Can ya feel the love? Can you feel it? Ahhhhh, the love was just oozing all over the Liquid Room at the Canada Wet Gig last night - beaming bands. beaming punters... OK, so I'd had one or two or three or I forget how many Bloody Mary's but it sure as hell wasn' just the juice talkin.
What a great night, and what a brilliant opportunity to showcase some of Canadas fabulous musical talents. I had only ever heard of Broken Social Scene before last night, but came away more than impressed with all the other bands on the lineup (except the Dears who were soo bland I sat them out altogether). Especially noteworthy were Death from Above 1979 who were so rockin' that I experienced my first real mosh in Japan, made much more fun by the fact that Sebastian, the singer/drummer was the sexiest mo-fo I've watched perform since I came to Japan. Shame the damn cameras nazi's were being such nazi's last night, I only had to *think* about taking a photo and I got a waving finger. The problems of being up the front, ay. Security was very tight. So the photos are all pretty crappy, sorry.
Anyway, I wonder why there isn't/hasn't been an Australian embassy funded event to promote Australian bands effectively, like this extraordinarily successful event (which did receive funding from the Canadian Embassy)? I can see a great big gap for someone to step in and start getting an annual event together to promote Australian music in Japan.
Interesting thoughts as I take my first not-so-tentative steps back into the Music Industry Ring once again. My good friends and former clients, Sekiden, have asked me to take on the job of being their Tokyo Rep. It'll be too easy - they already have a record label and a publisher here, all I have to do is stir the pot a little. It's all very new - I only accepted yesterday. Excited about all sorts of possibilities. Mmmmmmmm, yeah.
