I just found out that the wonderful Paul Hester, former drummer of Crowded House and Split Enz and a zillion other projects killed himself on Saturday evening. I am really really shocked and saddened by this tragedy. Who ever would have guessed that he had such harsh demons to battle.
I had the pleasure of meeting Paul on a couple of music biz occasions and backstage soirees and his warmth was quite infectious, as was his sense of humour. My condolences go out to his (ex)partner and their 2 kids, and also to my friends Bill and Edrei Cullen who worked closely with Crowded House for many years.
I'm so sad. A bright light turned itself off. Such a waste. Such a loss.

I spent the whole of Sunday listening to old Crowded House/Split Enz cds, especially the live ones where Hessie is joking around (as usual).
So very sad :(

Part of me wants to berate him for leaving such young children fatherless, but then again this obviously isn't your typical Cobain-esque I-want-to-be-immortal-so-let's-go-out-with-a-bang goodbye. Either way it is very very sad.

yes it is. i can't stop thinking about it. the recurring phrase is "it's very very sad", both in my head and in emails from industry friends today. I don't think anyone can quite believe it.

i think he was one of those bright sparks as you say martine, who was so 'infectious', that for those who only knew him through their stereo's and tv's, are almost as equally shocked and saddened. i feel a little of the loss too.
