Tuning In

This new upgrade of Movable Type (V3.12) ain't half bad, although there was a lot more work for me to do than I expected after the excellent hired-help finished (the very lovely Sarah at Six Apart) . Lots of template tinkering, particularly to get this damned Typekey thingy happening properly. But I think that now, everything is finally working.

Typekey is an interesting new-ish initiative that the Six Apart team masterminded. Here's the speil direct from the official site:

"TypeKey helps ensure that people who comment on a site have a verified identity, keeping conversations on track and helping to prevent abusive or offensive content (comment spam) from being posted. Sites that enable TypeKey have better accountability for the content that's being published. As a TypeKey user, you get your own free TypeKey Profile Page, displaying only the information you choose to share. Those who are interested in finding out more about the person behind the comments on a site can visit the identity page to see what information is publicly available. You can even publish a TypeKey Profile Page while remaining completely anonymous."

The idea is to try to cut down on comment spam, and I'm giving it a shot. So, any of you regular posters should run off now and sign up for an account at Typekey.

Go on, off you go. Now, that was easy, wasn't it.

Now, when you go to post a comment here for the first time, after you write your message, hit the PREVIEW button, not the POST button. It will take you to a link that recommends that you sign in to frangipani. And viola, once you do that you should be able to hit POST and you will never again be required to sign in again (except at The Mothership).

For those of you who think that Typekey is too "big brother", then I have also enabled "non-registered" comments through a screening/moderating process, where all non-verified comments come through and wait for approval before they get posted. So, please feel free to try out this new system in any way you see fit.

Huge thanks to Elise for her massively helpful site jam-packed full of MT hints and links. Also thanks to Donald over at Anzi Design for his upgrading MT 2.x Blogs To Movable Type 3 Tutorial. Nice work.

Found the login button on the preview page only by chance. It might need to be highlighted or underlined. At my age it is easy to get confused.

For readers baffled by all these "uncles", I must confess to you that neither of them are actually my uncles.

Uncle Don is a lovely man from my old home town who spent a lot of time in Japan and married a Japanese woman. He is a wealth of valuable info and wise advice for me, and we have actually met. He recently won a framed print from me for being the 1000th commenter, and I will be presenting it to him in person next Saturday in Brisbane. I do think of Mr Uncle Don as an Uncle.

Uncle Bob is a crazy man from Melbourne I think, he writes these totally eccentric comments which are always rather entertaining and strange. I have never met Mr Uncle Bob. Strangely enough, I do have a real Uncle Bob in the UK.

So, that's the Uncle story.
