the yanagisawa family alcove scroll

yanagisawascroll.jpg

sorry! so many stories to tell, so many photos to share, so little damn time at home.... so here is a little eye candy just to ease the pain of the hoffy christmas image down the screen a little....

this is the scroll in the yanagisawa family tatami room alcove. every japanese home has a special alcove where special treasures are kept and a small shrine maintained. we were there on tuesday for the official housewarming and christmas party.....

my holidays start on saturday, i can't wait for the mad frenzy to cease. although it's been great fun. ciao for now.

Very nice scroll... Is the character a daruma? If so, would the significance of both eyes being filled in have anything to do with the house? That is, you said "official housewarming," so I'm assuming the house is newly-built or bought and it's a big step for the family--or am I reading way too much into it? ^~^ Anyway, just stopping by to enjoy your photos, as usual... Keep up the great work!

yes, it is indeed a daruma.

the doll versions of darumas traditionally have white eyes until luck comes. maybe one eye painted in first until the luck is complete.

but they are always PAINTED with eyes. same meaning: it still means to keep on going until luck comes.

oh, and the scroll is the same one that was in the last house, so yes, you are reading too much. never the less, good observation! have you lived in japan?

No, sadly, I haven't lived there, but I have traveled across Japan (Tokyo to Nagoya to Hiroshima via Tokaido Shinkansen)... I also spend much of my time reading about Japan, watching Japanese television (via Usenet and Bittorrent) and wishing I could live there--i.e., living vicariously through people like yourself who do live there and post their experiences for us to enjoy.
