more butoh

white face
oops, butoh breast
fuhu, one of the hottest Butoh dancers in Tokyo.

Monday, April 26, 2004, Tokyo. A photojournalist by the name of Ziv Goran launched his exhibition of photos at an Ebisu Gallery, run by Tokyo's flamboyant and legendary chinese-jewish-gay art patron, Mr Johnny Walker. Attended by many of Tokyo's (and the worlds) art glitterati including the Mori Art Museum head, and the New York Art Gallery Head and a bunch of suits who kept turning up in chauffer driven cars, it was a fascinating, cosmopolitan event. The only thing missing was Carrie Bradshaw and her cronies...

My friends Matt & Milo, from the Australian band Function had somehow been roped into doing an experimental soundtrack performance, to be accompanied by some Butoh dancers. The band were staying at our place, so my flatmate Tim ("I'm with the band") Scott and I played roadies for the night and somehow ended up in this most surreal of events. Absolutely fabulous darlings.

Actually attended another art exhibition on Friday night (with kat and darin) at the completely opposite end of the spectrum to this event. A bunch of young artists had hired out a gorgeous old house in Shin-Nakano. The entrance was lit by a small sign and you walked down a tiny little sidelane to get into the rear courtyard, then up a rickety set of old and extremely steep stairs, through a split curtain ... and viola. A couple of solo singer-songwriters played, no-one could speak English and we were given a questionnaire to fill in about our thoughts on every single piece. Equally fabulous.

Did I mention how much Tokyo rocks?

Check out the rest of the Butoh photos here. By the way, I have put up some new photo galleries but I don't think I mentioned them here. Please check the list in the left sidebar or head straight to the gallery index.
