now i mentioned in my previous post that we have a band staying with us, alongside my 2 guests justin and evette, and dave's friend corey (a grand total of 14 people staying in a 7 bedroom house....). turns out that i know 2 of the 4 members of the band. one of them, a guy called ian, was in a brisbane band called small world experience (we've been quite amused by the impeccable title of this afore-mentioned band in light of recent events.... ) and another, milo, is a good friend of joc, kai and nicco (zooies). i love a good small world experience....
so they have played their 2 tokyo gigs and have had some 6 hours sleep in 3 days. it's been an astonishing feat of endurance and i am suitably impressed. they play fairly experimental dreamy post rock stuff (god i hate the whole genre thing but i guess at times like this it is useful), and so the bands they played with were in much the same vein. there was a lot of mutual admiration inter-band stuff going on, the strongest bonds forged with the very excellent 2 sister/2 boy band miaou (who played with art of fighting when they toured here last year) and the 3 piece green milk from the planet orange (who play 30 minute songs).
and the very best part about all this very delightful fun and mischief is that function are signed to wonderground music, a very cool little indie label run by a guy named kato takaaki. we got talking about stuff and it turns out that he signed the go-betweens for japan, and also a heap of other australian acts, pretty much all of them bands i have worked with over the years. he is a HUGE go-betweens fan and got into the music industry purely because of them, so it was quite a bonding force when i told him that i know grant (go-between) quite well. we got all excited about the possibilities of teaming up together to get a strong japan-australia tour circuit happening. very good news indeed.
