stairs

stairs.jpg

up on a little hill above kawaguchiko's bridge is a small shrine with a fabulous view of fuji-san and the lake. access is via an amazingly wobbly set of old stone stairs. not to be attempted on a very windy day. really. life-endangering. adrenalin pumping. great fun.

need to escape japan for a while? check out razzi's photos from the carnival of venice. sublime. while you're there, check out the rest of his photos. they're all amazing.

yes, a recent photo. 2 weeks ago. we haven't had much snow this winter.

people die each year climbing fujisan off-season. the winds are astonishing, they get physically lifted up off the mountain and thrown down. kinda like the mountain just doesn't want them there. be careful if you climb early, go with a group, and take experienced mountain climbers because there is NO support on the ground in the off-season (ie the rescue teams are off duty). a few weeks before and after climbing season is fine, many people do it then to try to beat the crowds. just use your head and be sensible if you choose to do it early.

And get some of those things that workmen put over their boot to stop stuff going down between your socks and your boots. If you come down the slippery path, which is quicker and hell on your knees, you will appreciate not having sharp particles of volcanic ash in your boots. Climb at night to arrive at dawn and come down in the daylight. Don't even think about climbing in May, however it is well worth going up in season. Good luck.
